About Eleanor Roosevelt:

Anna Eleanor Roosevelt was an American political figure, diplomat and activist. She was the longest-serving First Lady of the United States, having served from 1933 to 1945 during her husband President Franklin D. Roosevelt's four terms in office. Although she was widely respected in her later years, Eleanor Roosevelt was a controversial First Lady at the time for her outspokenness, particularly on civil rights for African-Americans. Roosevelt served as the United States Delegate to the United Nations General Assembly from 1945 to 1952. She served as the first chair of the UN Commission on Human Rights and oversaw the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Later, she chaired the Presidential Commission on the Status of Women under the John F. Kennedy administration. She redefined the role of the first lady through her active participation in American politics and spoke out for human rights, children’s causes, and women’s issues.
