About Mae Jemison:

In 1987, Mae Carol Jemison was the first African America female to be selected to join the NASA training program. In September, 1992, she became the first African American female to travel in space. Mae Jemison earned the title of science mission specialist — a job that would make her responsible for conducting crew-related scientific experiments on the space shuttle. Jemison is also an experienced engineer and a physician in the field of general medicine. Mae Jemison has achieved many accomplishments over her lifetime. She holds several honorary doctorates and has been inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame and the International Space Hall of Fame.
